Kochi: The world is watching with amazement as the INS Vikrant, a fully indigenously built warship, was commissioned into the Indian Navy today.
Building a warship without the participation of other countries is not an ordinary thing. There are only 5 countries in the world – USA, Russia, Britain, France and China – that have domestically produced warships.
In that way, India has now joined the list of superpowers by building the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.
We have already heard the name INS Vikrant. It is also an aircraft carrier used by India. But it was a warship used by the British and sold to India after independence.
A connection from the time of Mountbatten.. Indian Navy flag and interesting background!
INS Vikrant – I
The gallantry shown by INS Vikrant-I, which joined the Indian Navy in 1961, is no small feat. In the 1971 India-Pakistan war, INS Vikrant is credited with completely paralyzing the Pakistani army in East Bangladesh. The Indian Navy retired the long-serving INS Vikrant in 1997.
INS Vikramaditya was the only aircraft carrier in the Indian Navy after INS Vikrant. It was also developed in Russia.

It was then that the Indian government came up with the idea of building another aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy. Consequently, the task of preparing an aircraft carrier was awarded to Cochin Shipyard in 2003. Accordingly, the modern INS warship was created after 13 years of labor of thousands of workers. Although it joined the Indian Navy in 2017, the ship was officially dedicated to the country today after various stages of trials.
18 floors – 2,400 rooms
INS Vikrant is the largest aircraft carrier currently in service with the Indian Navy. Built at a cost of around Rs 20,000 crore, the ship is 262 meters (860 feet) long and 60 meters (197 feet) high. That means the area of the ship is equal to three football fields. The gross weight of the ship is 45,000 tons. The ship can accommodate 30 fighter jets and 10 helicopters at a time. The 18-decker INS Vikrant has 2,400 cabins. 1,700 people can travel on this huge ship at a time. It has separate rooms for female naval personnel.
This ship, which travels at a speed of 28 knots, can travel up to 7,500 knots without stopping once it is refuelled. The ship has a large catering facility and a state-of-the-art hospital with 16 beds. There are 4 engines to power this ship. These 4 engines are capable of producing 88 MW of electricity. In other words, these engines can provide electricity for a large city.
Apart from this, this warship INS Vikrant has sophisticated weaponry to attack the enemy forces. The ship has the logistical facility to launch the largest missiles without a warship or helicopter. INS Vikrant has the capability to attack enemy targets at long range. Similarly, it is equipped with modern sensors to detect enemy warships and missiles coming towards it in advance and an automatic system to attack and destroy them immediately.
The addition of such a capable state-of-the-art aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, to the Indian Navy has boosted our nation’s security manifold. Also, there is no doubt that INS Vikrant will be a dream come true for China, which is trying to dominate the Indian Ocean. In short, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the INS Vikrant a ‘floating city’ while dedicating it to the nation. But in reality INS Vikrant is called ‘Eman floating in the sea’ by other countries.
