Justice YU Lalit, who has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, will formally take his oath on Saturday morning. President Thirelapathi Murmu will administer the oath to him in a function held at his residence.

He will remain as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for only 74 days.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court N.V. Ramana retired on Friday. On this occasion, a farewell program was held for him on Friday evening on behalf of the Supreme Court Advocates Association. Judge U.U. Lalit said, “The main task of the Supreme Court is to make the law clear. To make it possible in the best possible way, it should have large sessions which can always function so that the problems can be solved immediately.”

“Therefore, we will always try hard to have a constitutional session functioning throughout the year,” he said.

He said that he would simplify the list of cases as much as possible and try to establish a precise administrative system for mentioning urgent matters.

U.U. said he would focus on three things during his 74-day tenure. Lalit said.

First is listing the cases. I promise to make that list as simple and transparent as possible.

Second, the act of referring to urgent matters. We will consider this. Soon you will get a clear position regarding this. We shall provide a system of free reference of any urgent matter before the respective Courts.

Thirdly, cases relating to the Constitutional Session and the Three Judges Session. Because I believe the main job of the Supreme Court is to make the law clear. Thus people will learn about the unique positions of law. Yes, we will strive for a single constitution bench throughout the year,” Justice Lalit said.

NV retired from the post of Chief Justice. Discussing Ramana’s achievements, he noted that the appointment of 250 judges to the High Courts during Ramana’s tenure was significant. Lalit said.

Justice Udai Umesh Lalit was born on 9th November 1957 in Solapur, Maharashtra. His father U.R. Lalit was an Additional Judge in the Nagpur Branch of the Bombay High Court and a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court.

Judge U.U. Lalit studied law at Government Law College, Mumbai and enrolled as an advocate in June 1983. Specializing in criminal law, he served as an advocate in the Bombay High Court from 1983 to 1985. Subsequently, from 1986 to 1992, he served on the legal team of the then Attorney General of India, Soli Sorabjee. In 1994, he appeared for BJP leader and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, who was charged with contempt of court for failing to stop the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Earlier, Kalyan Singh had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court assuring him that the incident would be prevented from happening at the disputed site. In 1998, U.U. acted for Bollywood actor Salman Khan in a wildlife poaching case. Lalit argued that the actor was then accused of killing two black tigers. Also, he appeared for BJP leader and then Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah, accused of murder in the Shorabuddin Sheikh and Tulshiram Prajapati fake encounter case.U.U. Lalit was admitted as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court in April 2004. The Supreme Court utilized his services as an advocate for the court in several important cases related to forests, vehicular pollution, pollution of the Yamuna river.

In 2011, U.U. was appointed as a special public prosecutor in the 2G spectrum scam case. Lalit was appointed. He also served two terms as a member of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC). Thus, U.U. becomes the sixth judge to be directly appointed as a judge in the Supreme Court without serving as a judge in a lower court or a high court. Lalit.

Lalit was appointed as the acting chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) on 14 May 2021.

During his tenure, Justice Lalit retired without hearing many important cases. On 12 November 2014, he recused himself from the hearing of the review petition of death row inmate Yakub Memon. This is because, while still a lawyer, he had appeared for Yakub Memon in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. On 4 September 2015, Justice Lalit recused himself from the 2008 Malegaon blast case. Because in that case too he appeared and argued for some of the accused.

Since he had appeared in the past on behalf of Kalyan Singh, the accused in the Ayodhya case, when the case related to the Ayodhya rights dispute came to his bench, from which on January 10, 2019, U.U. Lalit withdrew. With this backdrop, Justice Lalit will be sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of India on August 27, 2022. He will serve as the Chief Justice for two and a half months.
