Koraput: The country’s Independence Day was celebrated with passion after 30 years in Malkangiri district, a stronghold of Maoists in Odisha. The tricolor flag of the nation is now fluttering in the stronghold of the Maoists.
Maoists have been waging war against the government for more than 30 years, with the ideology of seizing power through armed revolution. There was a time when the Maoists spread across many states of the country and were the lion’s share of the government.
Maoist flag flew in many states like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar. Especially the Odisha-Andhra-Chhattisgarh state border areas were the main areas of the Maoists.
Odisha’s Koraput and Malkangiri forests are spread across these 3 states. This was also convenient for the Maoists. A large number of Adi tribes of Dravidian descent inhabit the hill ridges in these regions. Apart from them live the Bonda tribes. It was a great struggle for government structures to approach these primitive tribal habitats. Therefore, these hill villages were not even provided with electricity till a few years after the independence of the country. This is where the Maoists became comfortable to hide and recruit.
Even the Border Security Force personnel working on China and Pakistan borders were called to suppress the Maoists. The gap between the tribal people and the government has been reduced significantly. As a result, the dominance of the Maoists gradually began to decline.
Maoists used to disrupt these events on every Independence Day and Republic Day of the country. But this year, for the first time in 30 years, the Maoist strongholds of Odisha’s Koraput and Malkangiri, the tribal people celebrated with national flag hoisting. Even at the memorials of the Maoists, our national flag was hoisted this time!
