Salman Rushdie attack

Famous writer Salman Rushdie, who was stabbed by an unidentified assailant at an event in New York, is on a ventilator and unable to speak, his agent said.

Author Salman Rushdie, who faced years of death threats after writing Satan’s Verses, was stabbed and attacked on a stage in New York.

The Booker Prize winner was attacked while speaking at a non-profit Shattauqua Institute event.

Eyewitnesses said that the person who was in the audience at the show suddenly got on the stage and stabbed Rushdie in the neck.

Following this, the organizers of the event immediately rushed to Salman Rushdie and tried to save him, in a video uploaded on the Internet.

He was immediately airlifted to hospital.

Rita Lindman, a doctor at the Shattauqua event, treated Rushdie after the stabbing, according to the New York Times. She said Rushdie suffered multiple stab wounds, including to the right side of his neck. The area where he collapsed on the stage was seen pooling blood. Rushdie seemed to be alive at that time. Bystanders also called out, “He has a pulse,” said Dr. Rita Lindman.

The person who assaulted Salman Rushdie has been caught from the spot. His name is Hadi Mattar. He is said to be a resident of New Jersey.

New York police have confirmed that the man ran towards the stage and stabbed Salman Rushdie and his interviewer. The interviewee sustained a head injury.

The injured Rushdi was operated on. “He could lose an eye. Nerves in his arm are severed. His liver is damaged,” said his agent, Andrew Wesley.

It is still not clear what led to his attack. Police are examining electronic devices in the attacker’s bag.

In this situation, the majority leader of the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, has registered his strong condemnation of the attack on Salman Rushdie. He said on his Twitter page that this is an attack on freedom of speech and expression.

Salman Rushdie is known as a voice for freedom of expression and has on many occasions issued opinions in defense of his works.

Salman’s speech was the keynote address at a summer lecture series event hosted by Shattucka, a nonprofit organization in New York. Following the incident, the entire area has been sealed off and brought under police surveillance.

Eyewitness accounts

Meanwhile, local media outlet Mark Sommer of the Buffalo News told the BBC that the attacker was wearing a black mask.

Mark Sommer said witnesses told him that the assailant, who was sitting in the audience row, suddenly climbed onto the stage and began attacking Rushdie.

It has been learned that 10 to 15 people rushed to Salman Rushdie’s rescue as soon as the man started attacking him, during which time Rushdie collapsed on the floor for about five or more minutes.

After that, his companions took him by the hand and helped him to the hospital in the helicopter that was waiting outside.

“Usually Salman Rushdie comes out surrounded by extra security guards. It is hard to believe that he would not have had adequate security. The assailant must have entered the stage within seconds of the performance,” says journalist Somar.

Carl Lewin said he was sitting 14 or 15 rows back in the audience section during the attack in the closed arena.
