BANGKOK: Thai Prime Minister Prayuth San O’Sa has announced that his country will provide asylum to former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapakse until he is granted asylum.
Sri Lanka experienced the worst economic crisis in 70 years. As a result, the normal life of the public in Sri Lanka was destroyed.
The people of Sri Lanka held spontaneous protests to correct this economic deterioration. As a result of these protests, Mahinda Rajapakse resigned as Prime Minister first. Then Ranil Wickremesinghe became the interim Prime Minister of the country.
But the popular uprising continued demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. During the extreme protests held on July 9, the public occupied the Presidential Palace. Gotabaya Rajapakse ran away from the Presidential Palace. Gotabaya also resigned from the presidency. Thus Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected as the new President of Sri Lanka.
Gotabaya then left Sri Lanka and first took refuge in the Maldives. But there was opposition to give asylum to Gotabaya Rajapaksa in Maldives. Protests were also held against Gotabaya Rajapakse.
Due to this, Gotabaya Rajapaksa left Maldives and went to Singapore to hide. At the same time, the demand to arrest Gotabaya Rajapakse for Sri Lankan war crimes and massacre of Tamils grew stronger. Many MPs in the UK Parliament urged the Singapore government to arrest Gotabaya Rajapakse.
In this case Gotabaya Rajapaksa is going to Thailand from Singapore today. As he could not continue to stay in Singapore, Gothapaya sought asylum in Thailand.
Regarding this, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth San O Cha said that Gotabaya Rajapakse will stay temporarily in Thailand until he finds permanent refuge in another country. As a result, it is confirmed that Thailand will provide temporary asylum to Gothapaya.
Thailand has agreed to allow Gotabaya Rajapaksa to stay in the country temporarily.
