Tirupattur: The Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidian and Tribal Commission has ordered that beef biryani should not be avoided during food festivals.
The Tirupattur district administration had announced that a biryani festival would be held last May with a view to getting a geographical code for Ambur biryani.
Arrangements were made for this grand biryani festival in the commercial center complex at Kannikapuram on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway.

Progressive organizations have alleged that the ban on beef biryani, which is a favorite of people from the lower and minority communities, is untouchable. Thirumavalavan, party leader of the DMK-allied Holiday Cheetahs, announced that they would provide free beef biryani. Following strong protests, the district administration announced the cancellation of the Ambur Biryani festival. The district administration’s announcement that the Ambur Biryani festival has been postponed due to heavy rain has also come under heavy criticism.

In this regard, the Vishik Labor Organization had submitted a petition to the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidian and Tribal Commission. The Commission, which considered the matter, sought an explanation from the District Collector saying that allowing beef biryani in a festival featuring 20 types of biryani was discriminatory against Adi Dravidians and tribals.

Responding to this, Tirupattur District Collector Amarkushwaha mentioned about pork and clarified that caste discrimination was not shown. Accepting this, the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidian and Tribal Commission has ordered that beef biryani should not be avoided in the biryani festival organized by the government, as it will cause hardship.
