Ramanathapuram District Kenikarai Police Station has been accused of stealing a cell phone and two policemen have been dismissed.
Ashokumar, a constable with the Ramanathapuram Armed Forces, committed suicide last year. Kenikarai police registered a case in this regard. Relatives of Ashok Kumar, who said there was a mystery in the policeman’s suicide, went to court demanding that the CBCID investigate the case.
Later the case was transferred to CBCID. The CBCID police have asked Kenikar police to hand over the items related to the case. It was only then that Kenikarai police came to know that Ashokumar’s cell phone, which was confiscated and kept at the police station, was stolen.
Subsequently, the CBCID police recovered the stolen cell phone with the help of cybercrime police. They also identified those who had cell phones. On questioning him, he said that he bought this cell phone from a cell phone shop in Ramanathapuram.
When the CBCID police immediately questioned the cell phone shopkeeper, two policemen from Kenikarai police station said that they had left this cell phone for 2,000 rupees. The CBCID police interrogated DSP Raja, Inspector Malachami, Writer Suresh and Constable Kamalakannan in this regard.
Then they came to know that both police station clerk Suresh and constable Kamalakannan had taken the cell phone and sold it. It has also come to light in the investigation that these two had confiscated and sold the jewels seized in the love affair of a businessman’s daughter.
Subsequently, the District Superintendent of Police Thangadurai ordered the removal of both the police officers.
When asked about this from Ramanathapuram District Superintendent of Police, he said that he could not give any information as the case is under investigation by CBCID.
