Kochi: India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier Vikrant at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore was handed over to the Indian Navy yesterday.
On behalf of India, India used 2 aircraft carriers namely INS Vikrant and INS Virat. These two British designed ships were used in independent India as well.
In this case, it was decided to build an aircraft carrier on behalf of India. The central government took action for this.

End of shipyard work
The shipbuilding project was awarded to Kochi Shipyard Limited, a company controlled by the Union Ministry of Shipping. Accordingly, an indigenously manufactured aircraft carrier was completed. The construction of this ship has been completed in 3 phases.
Handover to Indian Navy
The ship was handed over to the Indian Navy yesterday as India celebrated its 75th Independence Day. The construction of this ship started in 2009 and took place in three phases. Now after 13 years the work has been completely completed and handed over to the Indian Navy. It is soon to be inducted into the Indian Navy. It is likely to tie up with the Navy as part of India’s 75th Independence Day celebrations.
20 thousand crores
The aircraft carrier INS Vikrant has been manufactured entirely in India at a cost of Rs 20 thousand crores. 75 percent of shipbuilding materials are sourced from India. Companies in India including BEL, BHEL, GRSE, Keltron, Kirloskar, Larsen & Toubro, Wartsila India provided shipbuilding equipment. The steel for the ship was supplied by the DRTO and Steel Commission partnership under the control of the Union Army. Through this, ‘Aatmanirbar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ schemes for domestic production have been implemented.
What are the facilities?
The aircraft carrier Vikrant is designed to carry 1,700 passengers with 2,300 cabins and a gross tonnage of 45,000 tons. The ship is 860 feet long, 203 feet wide and 19 feet high. It has a maximum speed of 53 kilometers per hour. 30 including MIG-29K fighter jet, Kamov-31, MH-60R multi-role helicopters, Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). Capable of operating an air wing consisting of aircraft. It is also noteworthy that this aircraft carrier will improve our country’s security position in the Indian Ocean region.
