Congress MP Athir Ranjan Chelatri from West Bengal called President Draupadi Murmu ‘Rashtrapadni’ and has created controversy.
The BJP leaders strongly protested against his comment and demanded an apology from Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi.
Congress leaders have been protesting for the past three days against the Enforcement Directorate’s investigation into Sonia Gandhi.
During the protest on Wednesday, in an interview to a news channel, Congress MP Athir Ranjan Chelatri referred to President Draupadi Murmu as ‘Rashtrapatni’.
Talking about not being allowed to enter the President’s House, he said, “I was not allowed to go there yesterday. I will go there today. The President of India belongs to everyone. The President is not the President of the Republic; he is the ‘Rashtrapatni’ of India. If so, is he not for us?” .
Following this, he said the next day, “There is no question of apologizing. Why should I apologize to the BJP? Whoever is the President of India, he is the President of all. But some ruling parties are turning a mustard-sized issue into a mountain-sized issue.”
“For two days we were going towards Vijay Chowk. We were being asked where we were going. We were telling them that we want to go to the President’s House and meet the President. The word came by mistake yesterday. What should I do?
If you want to hang me, hang me. “He was gone before I could stop the journalist and tell him that the word had come out by mistake,” he said.
During the Monsoon session of Parliament, there was a lot of tension regarding this issue.
Congress apologized to BJP for Athir Ranjan Chlewtri’s comments on Draupadi Murmu. In this case, Athir Ranjan Chelatri requested the Speaker of the Lok Sabha to give him time to speak in the Parliament about the alleged insult to the President.
Draupadi Murmu was India’s first woman tribal president. Former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu has been fielded as the presidential candidate from the ruling National Democratic Alliance. He defeated the opposition candidate and former finance minister Yashwant Sinha by a huge margin. He was sworn in on 25th July.
She was also the first woman and tribal governor of Jharkhand. After retiring from that post, he lives in Rairangpur in Mayurpanj district of his home state of Odisha. What did Smriti Irani say about this?
Following this, the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon. Earlier, BJP MPs protested this comment in Parliament. But due to the protest, they were again postponed till 4 pm.
Regarding this issue, Union Minister Smriti Irani said, “Since the announcement of Draupadi Murmu’s name as the presidential candidate, Draupadi Murmu has become a target of hatred and ridicule from the Congress party. The Congress party has called him a puppet.”
“A tribal woman has held the country’s highest constitutional post yet the Congress party has failed to accept it. Sonia Gandhi-appointed Assembly Speaker Athir Ranjan called Draupadi Murmu a ‘Rashtrapadni’.” said.
Explained by Sonia Gandhi
At the same time, Sonia Gandhi also explained about Athir Ranjan Chelatri’s comment. Asked whether Athir Ranjan would apologize for his comments, Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi said, “He has apologised.”
Resistance to force
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that Sonia Gandhi should apologize to the President and the nation.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahalad Joshi has said that this is an act of insult to the tribals. “This is an insult to the tribals and to the President of the country. He should apologize immediately. Sonia Gandhi should apologize for appointing such a person.” said.
“We will not tolerate this humiliation. As a country, as a woman, we will not tolerate this. It is shameful that a tribal woman is being shamed for becoming the President of the Republic. They should apologise,” BJP MP Rama Devi, who has protested against Athir Ranjan Chelatri, said.
At the same time, Union Minister Piyush Goyal has accused Athir Ranjan Chelatri of deliberately making such a comment and repeating it.
He deliberately made such a comment twice in public. Is it a small thing? Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi should apologize before Parliament and the nation. The manner in which Athir Ranjan Chelatri insulted the President shows his state of mind. The nation will never tolerate denigration of tribal people. After all this, he said, there was no need to apologize for this.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Selakhan has questioned whether Sonia Gandhi agrees with Athir Ranjan’s views.
In his Twitter post, he said, “Congress President Athir Ranjan has insulted the highest office of the country with his comments. It is an expression of his and his party’s bad mood. His comments are anti-tribal, anti-women. The President does not belong to any party, he belongs to this entire country.”
“I want to ask Sonia Gandhi that your leaders are using such bad words. If so, do you also agree with her views? This country wants to know this. No one in the history of India has done such a defamatory act to the Hon’ble President. Congress, Sonia and others should apologize to the people in the Lok Sabha. ” said.
Amidst the controversy, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has immediately called for an emergency meeting of senior party leaders, according to news agency ANI. Mallikarjun Kharge and Athir Ranjan Chelatri have also been invited in this meeting.
