Comment on India
Regarding India, India once played a significant role in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid and even in civil rights movements. Seventy-five years ago India became independent. Its non-violent struggle forced the British to grant independence.
Behind great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Motilal Nehru and Subhash Chandra Bose, India set an example of refusing to privilege any race or religion. They preached equal respect for all irrespective of color and creed. Because of this, India inspired men like Mandela who fought to make the world more dignified and democratic.
In South Africa, the Indian model of struggle is very important. Because my grandfather, Nelson Mandela, referred to India’s freedom struggle and pondered how to end apartheid. But while India today has sought a secular, intolerant state, it presented a democratic and pluralistic vision to the world 75 years ago. The India of 75 years ago is no more. Islamophobia is eroding the democracy of India, the largest democracy in the world.
Gang violence, citizenship issues and mixed marriages are increasing in India. Likewise, Muslims are facing many problems at the national level. By promoting Islamophobia in India, India is missing opportunities to mend religious divides. This will lead to serious consequences in future, when political and economic problems arise. Islamophobia is more undemocratic than dangerous. Islamophobia in India has ravaged what was once the world’s largest democracy. He said that a right leader is needed to move people through all these.
Islamophobia has corroded what was once the world’s largest democracy, as laws that belong to South Africa’s apartheid past pop up across India.
